  • North America leads the world in snacking.  But if you read any fitness, health or lifestyle magazines these days you can't help but see North Americans trying hard to find healthy snack alternatives.
  • It is has been published that a crunchy snack is more effective when you have a hunger craving.
  • It has also been published that the most consumed vegetables in North America are French fried potatoes and potato chips - both deep fried starchy vegetable choices.
  • The growing trend in North America is now to find snacking options that taste great, give us the crunch and are good for you.  Just read a health or fitness magazine.
  • Nuts as snacks have traditionally been deep fried and salted like their potato chip alternative.  But this trend is changing!
  • MANJEL Inc., a processor and packager of nuts, snacks and dried fruit in Mississauga Ontario has just launched a new line of resealable bags with raw nuts - natural almonds and natural cashews - targeted as a healthy snack alternative!
  • Some may not realize but there is as much calcium in an ounce of almonds as in a quarter cup of milk.  Almonds have more calcium than any other nut and are also packed with Vitamin E, magnesium, protein and potassium.  In addition, almonds have no cholesterol, are low in saturated fat and are surprisingly high in fiber.
  • The Almond Board of California further stated a study that found that people who ate a handful of almonds daily lowered their "bad" LDL cholesterol on average 4.4%.  Those who ate twice that (two ounces) daily lowered their LDL by 9.4% on average.  Wow!
  • In November 2003, a study compared the effects of a lower calorie diet that included almonds with a low-calorie, high carbohydrate diet.  Researchers found that while both groups lost weight initially, participants in the almond eating group were able to lose more weight and keep it off over time.
  • Leading researchers are finding that the healthy fats, fiber and protein in almonds seem to satisfy hunger.  This in turn helps people avoid overeating and to stick with their weight loss plans.  Two major studies are currently in progress correlating almond consumption with weight maintenance and can be found on the website of the California Almond Board.
  • The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a qualified health claim in 2003 as follows:  "Scientific evidence suggests but does not prove that eating 1.5 ounces per day of most nuts, such as almonds, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease.
  • In addition, researchers found that almonds have a large variety of antioxidants similar to those found in fruits and vegetables, tea and wine.  These antioxidants are in the skins of the almond and work together with the Vitamin E to promote heart health by protecting cholesterol from becoming too sticky and clogging arteries.
  • And don't forget Cashews - a very popular snacking option - no question.  But most people do not realize that raw natural cashews are an excellent source of protein and fiber, and if unsalted, are very low in Cholesterol and Sodium. Cashew nuts are rich in mono-unsaturated fat which may help protect the heart and are also a good source of Potassium, B vitamins, Folate, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Selenium, Copper and Manganese.
